How an old jeans pocket became a phone charging organizer

 

Old jeans often have plenty of useful life left in them, even when they are no longer suitable to wear. One of the most durable parts of a pair of jeans is the back pocket — and it can easily be turned into a practical phone charging pocket.

In this project, we will make a phone holder that hangs from a wall charger and keeps your phone safely in place while it charges. At the same time, the charging cable stays neatly organized and the phone is not left hanging from the cord.

The best part is that this project only requires a small piece of denim, one pocket, and a little bit of time.

Materials

• A back pocket from an old pair of jeans
• Denim fabric for the backing (another sturdy fabric will also work)
• Clear plastic, cardboard, or thick felt for reinforcement
• Bias tape for finishing the edges (optional)
• A hanging loop
• Sewing machine
• Scissors
• Pins or sewing clips
• Thread
• Decorative details of your choice

Step 1 – Remove the Pocket

Carefully remove the back pocket from the old pair of jeans, keeping it as intact as possible. The original stitching gives the finished project extra character, so try to preserve it whenever you can.

Note: Every jeans pocket is slightly different, which means each finished organizer will be unique.

Step 2 – Cut the Front and Back Pieces

Cut two rectangular pieces of denim, approximately A5 size. Make sure each piece is slightly larger than the pocket you removed.

Round the corners for a softer, more finished look.

Step 3 – Attach the Pocket

Sew the pocket onto one of the denim pieces you just cut. Try to position it roughly in the center.

Stitch along the pocket’s original seam lines whenever possible to keep the authentic denim look.

Now is also a good time to add any decorative details you like — leather labels, buttons, beads, patches, or anything else that gives the organizer your own style.

Step 4 – Add the Reinforcement and Back Piece

Next, join the front and back pieces together. Place the two denim pieces with the wrong sides facing each other and add the reinforcement between them.

For this organizer, I used a piece of laminating film cut slightly smaller than the denim pieces. The reinforcement gives the organizer more structure and helps it stay straight while the phone is charging.

Secure all the layers together with pins or sewing clips, then sew around the entire edge.

Step 5 – Finish the Edges

Finish the edges with bias tape. You can also leave the edges unfinished, but a neat finish makes the organizer more durable and gives it a cleaner, more professional look.

Step 6 – Add the Hanging Loop

Add a hanging loop to the top of the organizer. You can make it from denim, cord, leather lace, bias tape, or another sturdy material of your choice.

Sew the loop securely to the top edge.

Finished!

Your phone charging organizer is now ready to use.

The pocket holds your phone safely while it charges and helps keep the charging area neat and organized. The same idea can also be used for earphones, charging cables, notebooks, or other small everyday items.
